General Shale Wins Two Industry Awards!

We’re pleased to share that General Shale received two 2017 Brick in Architecture Awards from the Brick Industry Association (BIA) just last month.

In the Municipal/Government category, General Shale earned a GolddAward for the Beardsley Community Farm Education Center, a nonprofit urban farm in Knoxville, TN. Students from the University of Tennessee School of Architecture and Design worked on this charming, new education building that houses teaching activities about sustainable farming practices. More than 30,000 General Shale bricks were used to construct triple-width brick walls for the education center, providing superior energy efficiency and helping the project meet the requirements for LEED Gold certification.

The second Gold award was received in the Residential: Multi-Family category for The Jefferson condominium building in New York City. Construction began in 2013, and in 2016 the building became LEED Gold certified; the 115,000 square foot project is situated on the former site of the city’s first vaudeville theater. General Shale provided the charcoal brick blend for the dark brick piers on the building’s facade.

Held annually since 1989, the Brick in Architecture Awards are the nation’s premier architectural awards featuring clay brick. Judged by independent design professionals, the awards recognize outstanding designs that combine genuine clay brick with aesthetic and sustainability.
